Flood Relief

Update : 2nd October 2009

We highly need your prayers and support for our people and region.

Worst flood in 100 years, Kurnool and Andhra Pradesh devastated:

The Unprecedented floods in the Krishna river basin in Andhra Pradesh on Friday heaped misery on lakhs of people in Kurnool and Mahabubnagar districts and Vijayawada.  The Central Water Commission forecast that the inflows to Srisailam would go up to an enormous level of 20 lakh cusecs, the highest in history by Saturday morning, posing a threat to villages on the banks of Krishna not only in Kurnool and Mahabubnagar, but also in Nalgonda, Guntur and Krishna districts.

Kurnool, a city with a population of nearly five lakh, bore the brunt of the flood fury as water reached the first storey of several buildings. There were heart-rending scenes of people frantically seeking assistance to rescue them, but the government did not have sufficient number of boats or men to help them. It is estimated that about 40,000 people had taken shelter on the rooftops.

The floods inundated about 100 villages in Kurnool and Mahabubnagar districts. Many of them lay completely submerged while traffic on the Hyderabad-Bangalore National Highway 7 came to a grinding halt as the road breached near Beechupally, between Jadcherla and Kurnool.

A high alert has been sounded in Nalgonda, Guntur and Krishna districts as the discharge from Nagarjunasagar dam is expected to reach 8 lakh cusecs by Saturday. About 3 lakh people in vulnerable villages and the island habitations in the Krishna are being shifted to safer places in what officials claimed was one of the largest and quickest evacuation exercises.

Kurnool is in grave danger of submergence; Officials expect the flood level in Kurnool and Mahabubnagar districts to rise by four feet by Saturday night and another four feet by Sunday.

The situation in Andhra Pradesh is extremely critical – we have prepared the food packets and distributed in the flood affected areas on Friday evening at Vijayawada. The most immediate things needed are the following: medicines, blankets, mattresses, tents, food and water. We have done whatever we can so far with the little we have. We need your help. After this urgency goes, we want to help the people to rebuild their lives. We want to provide them with help to build their homes, furnish them and hopefully provide them with cattle, chicken and other domestic farm animals for their subsistence. Children and old men and women are suffering the most.

The help they receive comes from the hearts of the loving and caring people of the world. Help with your gift of any amount and prayers for the families are highly appreciated.

CHURCH OF GOD MINISTRIES INDIA is a Christ filled ministry and can be fully trusted to spend the money as GOD intends for it to be spent. Amen
